⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Soldier: 76
Age: N/A [Presumed 50s+]
Canon: Overwatch
Canon Point: Post Old Soldiers

Background: Gamepedia. TL;DR - Not Captain America leads Not Avengers, rocks fall and everybody thinks everybody else is dead until the old assholes refuse to go down quietly and end up bickering with one another about what to do now. There are gorilla space colonies, time-traveling Englishwomen (well, just one) with catchphrases adored by young children, monk robots who do in fact give boots to the head, and skating frog-themed DJs.

Personality:
The first thing most people would 'get' from the vigilante known as Soldier: 76 is that he seems like he's almost larger than life. Not physically, but his presence itself seems bigger than his body; there is a charisma about him that doesn't come off in beauty or charm. Instead, it's a sheer force of personality; a get out of my way or I'll run you over, a I give the orders around here, and so many other things that can't be contained in words or phrases. 76 is, in a single word, imposing - intimidating also applies, and he does nothing to dismiss either of these thoughts. In fact, one might go so far to say as he's cultivated that, whether consciously or not, and that he strives to come off as a threat.

Bear in mind, this is a person who is waging a one-man-war from the shadows, on those he believes truly responsible for the fall of Overwatch. He doesn't go after innocents, and strives to avoid them whenever possible. Instead, he throws himself in to the thick of a fight, using those shadows as an aid to terrify those who would not only rid the world of 'their' obstacles, but trample and prey on the weak on in the process. 76 does not consider himself a hero, not anymore, but he's far from a simple vigilante. In his own words, he's just a soldier, and he still has a war to fight - even if he's fighting alone.

It goes without saying that 76 is used to working alone. Has gotten used to working alone. Avoids others to work alone, maybe not a jack-of-all-trades but certainly possessing a high overall level of competence. As a result of leading a worlwide peacekeeping organization for more than two decades - and fighting for even longer than that - he has a great deal of combat experience, and could easily lead a group if he cared to do so. He just...doesn't care to do so much, anymore, and it shows. He's gruff, he's dry-humored, he's more likely to leave others to their own devices and just do his thing without taking responsibility for their success or failure...

...mainly because he did that for so long, and after giving so much of himself in to Overwatch, the result burnt him out. It wasn't so much from giving, but the backlash from that. He watched too many close friends die and some even betray him, and he saw the world turn on him - those who once hailed he and his as saviors soon decried them as just as bad as the people they were fighting against. They were being compared to criminals and terrorists, the 'Blackwatch' blackops program taking the brunt of the heat - not that it was ever officially acknowledged as existing - and 76, Jack Morrison, as the face and leader of Overwatch took the brunt of the assault. This wore him down, bit by bit, stressing him and causing him to manage things worse and worse until it all came crashing down in an attempted mutiny and an explosion.

Presumably, Jack could have held on for longer. But looking back he can see how Overwatch itself was crumbling from within, and that, combined with all his other bitter memories, give him little to no urge to take back the reigns much less reveal himself as alive. Nonetheless, he has answered the Recall, which was a call-to-action many years after it had been forcibly disbanded. So, obviously, there is some part of him that still has at least some strong feelings for the old group, even if he no longer feels comfortable leading it.

Hell, it seems that only a handful know who he is-or-was in the first place. And he certainly doesn't act like the old Jack Morrison; the old Jack was quick with a smile or inspirational quip, a steadying force at the helm guiding Overwatch through sheer belief. He was described as the moral compass, keeping them on track; if we're continuing that metaphor, than at this point his needle so much isn't bent or crooked, but wobbling and shaky. Yes, he still has an idea of right and wrong- however, he is taking in a certain amount of grey in his worldview, and employing tactics that his old self may have recoiled from. The man is brutal in combat, now, snarling like an animal while in melee and almost, almost willing to leave innocents to be caught in an explosion if it means caching the ones he's after-

He didn't. Old habits die harder than the soldiers they were born in. But compared to the man who would never have hesitated on such a choice, the fact 76 still considered it says something. And that's only one case - there's others. But for every one of those, there's events where he deliberately chose non-lethal methods to accomplish his goals, such as knocking out guards while raiding an old storehouse without outright, well, killing them. This further reflects the lingering duality within 76, because as much as he claims Jack Morrison is dead, the fact remains that he is a product of his experiences. And he could hardly dismiss all of them and still be whom and what he is now. He's certainly not the same as he was, but...how could he?

As mentioned, he's gone through just about too much to stay that way. It's worth noting that his two strongest relationships are the best examples of this; his second in command was a woman by the name of Ana Amari. She was an incredible sniper and a leveling presence in his life, and 'died' while on a mission covering his and his group's escape. While she didn't die, the trauma shook her, and she was thought to be dead for many years- until fairly recently, really. Interactions between her and 76 show that 76 actually does feel a little hurt, for all he's glad she's back, to which Ana offers a flippant 'you're one to talk' in reference to his own masking-his-survival. That in itself can be used to extrapolate much of their relationship, where she was absolutely ready to call him out when he needed to be - and that without her helping to steady and support him, he slipped all the further 'down'.

His second strongest relationship...was perhaps not so positive. At least, before Overwatch, during the Omnic Crisis which resulted in its formation- he worked very closely with a man named Gabriel Reyes. The two meshed well together, a yin and yang sort of balance and trust and as soon as Jack was offered the position of Strike Commander over Reyes it began to go downhill. While Reyes was also given a high position, it wasn't a public one - indeed, the leader of Blackwatch had to be somewhat incognito, though it was known that Gabriel was a member of Overwatch. The fact that he had been passed over for Morrison stung him, though, creating a rift between the two men that grew and grew over the years until Gabriel staged a mutiny to try and take Overwatch from Jack. The attempt was 'thwarted' by an explosion that was thought to have killed both men, though both survived...in a matter of speaking. Gabriel, now the nanotech-assised mercenary known as Reaper, knows very well who Soldier: 76 is and vice versa; the two continue their strong enmity towards one another, and are set to take it to the grave whenever it finally takes them.

But as far as 76 is concerned, he still has a lot to do before he can roll over and let himself die.

Abilities: 76 has undergone what's quietly described (but never acknowledged, because, of course, ~classified~) as the "Soldier Enhancement Program". Essentially, this grants him speed, strength, endurance and agility far above the likes of normal men and women; he can stand toe to toe with combat robots and have a good chance of coming out the better. In-verse, he's shown scaling sheer walls with nothing but a bit of momentum, and while he's far from bulletproof, a point-blank shotgun blast only hurt as opposed to outright kill.

He's also got some equipment which I'll throw in the 'Other' section as it's nothing inherent.

Alignment: Sosyne. While 76 was no doubt quite level-headed as the leader of Overwatch - and no doubt can still be calm, as evidenced by his in-game interactions - it's very telling that his spotlight video, 'Hero', has him acting with an animalistic ferocity when he's taking down the thugs of Los Muertes (complete with growls and snarls). One can presume that his anger at what led to Overwatch's fall has kept him going this long, or at least has contributed to it.
Secondary suggestions would be Thras and/or Peromei.

Other:
Soldier: 76 carries quite a bit of equipment with him, including body armor. Can't wage a personal war without protecting yourself, of course. While one can assume he has a few odds and ends with him, I'll be noting the major pieces below-

-HEAVY PULSE RIFLE
This is a (stolen!) piece of technology that's quite close to what his favored weapon was back in the day, as well. Though one gun is ultimately as good as the other, if it's what you have at hand, 76 is particularly skilled with this powerful unit that many men simply don't have the strength to manage. He's able to hold sustained fire with it for long periods of time, though it does have to cool down, and it does have ammunition. More likely than not 76 will be rationing his use.
---HELIX ROCKETS
The pulse rifle also has a secondary mode that shoots rocket missiles. Yes. Rocket missiles. As noted, their use will probably be rationed.

-SIDEARM
Same here, this appears to be a basic back-up pistol though 76 has never utilized it in game or in his so-far depictions.

-TACTICAL VISOR
This, however, is not so basic or a back-up piece; not only is this a vital part of 76's mask and what passes as a disguise to hide his identity, but it also aids in targeting and identifying key points on a battlefield. While the mask/visor also serve to protect him - eg, filtering out smoke and other such hazards, though he can't exactly breathe in space with it - the key usage is the fact that when the charge is up, the targeting system and his own hand-eye coordination make it difficult for him to miss.

-BIOTIC FIELD EMITTERS
76 has a couple of these on him at any given time; more stolen tech, just about everything he has is stolen or raided or otherwise scavenged. That said, these are useful to more than just him, or at least have the potential to be. They emit an energy that stimulate healing even in robots??? and otherwise give a temporary sort of refresher boost until one can get off the battlefield and in to a proper doctor's care for full examination.

Sample: These two are going to single-handedly ruin everyone's hard work.
